The Acropolis is the one historical site that you can't miss to explore. You can take a tour or wander up there yourself. Getting to the Acropolis in Athens is quite easy and more pleasant than ever because of the presence of large avenues, which borders the south and west of the site. For the convenience of the travelers, many cafes and restaurants have been opened alongside the streets of Acropolis.

You will find several steps to climb up to the Acropolis in Athens. The Propylaea was completed in 432 just before the outbreak of the Peloponnesian wars. The main architect for building the site was Mnesicles, a colleague of Phidias. There also exists a tiny temple to Nike Athena or the Athena of Victory, which commemorates the Athenians victory over the Persians.

This small temple stands on a platform that overlooks the islands of the Saronic Gulf and was used to house a statue of Athena. After it was dismantled by the Turks, it was again rebuilt between 1836 and 1842. The Parthenon and other main buildings on the Acropolis, Athens, Greece were built by Pericles in the 5th century BC, as a monument to the cultural and political achievements of the natives of Athens.
